五十年代后期，新中国文艺事业蓬勃开展，“百花齐放，推陈出新”、“走现实主义与浪漫主义相结合的道路”等创作方针得到中央大力提倡。
《披纱少女》的创作灵感源自1958年从法国带回的一块裸女披纱瓷板，文艺部门为此召开相关会议，号召艺术家们仿效西方造型手段，以填补景德镇陶瓷雕塑上的这一空白。当时，景德镇雕塑瓷厂及轻工部陶瓷研究所等单位都专门组织技术人员进行攻关，独辟蹊径的创作出了与真纱巾相仿的瓷质的彩饰纱巾。曾山东创作的这件瓷雕不仅显示了瓷质纱巾“薄如翼”的质感，并通过艺术与工艺的完美结合，使少女那种天真活泼、娇稚可爱的甜美形象得以淋漓展现。作品一经问世，即受到来自中央领导人及广大群众的高度评价，并在国内外多次参加巡展。景德镇雕塑瓷厂及轻工部陶瓷研究所等单位创作的该系列作品作为建国后景德镇陶瓷雕塑的经典代表，已被纳入景德镇陶瓷馆永久珍藏，并被誉为是“一次超过世界艺术水平的成功创作”。
