戒尺的由来

“戒尺”这个词最早出自于佛教，它是用两块木板制成。两块木板一仰一俯，通常是在“皈依、剃度、传戒、说法”等仪式中使用，所以叫做“戒尺”。禅宗认为佛法不可思议，开口即错，用心即乖。所以，许多禅师在考问弟子时，常一言不发地当头一棒，或大喝一声，提出问题让其回答，借以考验其悟境，打破弟子的执迷，棒喝因此成为佛门特有的施教方式，戒尺也成为佛教中传法的一种工具。

不过，真正让大家认识“戒尺”的是中国古代的教育，大家应该马上想到私塾先生用戒尺惩戒淘气的孩子的场景，这一教育惩戒制度在中国延续了二千余年，论语中没有记载孔子惩戒弟子的事例，但我相信，用戒尺打几下手心肯定是有的。毕竟“严师出高徒”的古训在中国由来已久。
