现代头盔主要由盔壳、衬里和悬挂系统等构成。由于从事各种活动使用要求不同，头盔的结构和式样很多。

通常，头盔的壳体都由强度较高的材料制成，如金属、工程塑料、凯芙拉纤维等等，通过它的变形来吸收大部分冲击力；衬里材料具有吸汗、保暖、减震的功能，头盔则往往还具有进一步减缓冲击力、防止壳体碎片伤及头部的功能；悬挂系统则是介于壳体与内衬之间的部分，通常可以调节，以适应不同的佩戴者头型的差别。
